This past week was a whirlwind.  Besides the board meetings and swearing in ceremony, I received a crash course on the layout of part of CrossRoads I, met some central office staff, began reviewing BAC 9 membership and verifying applications received/processed, and reached out to all District 9 principals to introduce myself as part of the first step in beginning our work together for our students and families.

In case you missed my opening remarks at the 12/1 board meeting, I dedicated my work as the District 9 Board of Education rep to my students and my kids. Leaving Davis Drive Middle School as a Special Education IA and telling my students "see you later" was difficult to do last week. However, they will be my motivation moving forward.

The following items were approved at the 12/1 board meeting:

  • 2021-2022 instructional calendars for traditional, modified and multi-track schools,
  • spending $835,000 to help cover athletic costs for schools; $25,000 for each high school, $60,000 for high school booking fees, and $5,000 for each middle school,
  • a one-time $500 bonus for all active, benefits-earning employees,
  • a fund balance appropriation in the amount of $17,676,641. More details are available here , and
  • waiver of policy 8101 to allow the amount of unassigned fund balance in excess of the 6% threshold be maintained for use by the Board instead of returning it to the county.

This week is filling up quickly with several new board member orientation sessions. I'm eager to gain more knowledge and continue to engage with our community.

I want to thank all the students, families, school staff, and community members that have taken the time to email, speak with me over the phone, attend a D9 Connection Meeting, attend a Board Advisory Council Meeting or attend any Board Meetings. I appreciate hearing directly from you and am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve District 9. While serving as the D9's representative, I have spend a significant amount of time attending events at our wonderful schools: beautification days, athletic signing events, band competitions and concerts, orchestra concerts, choral concerts, IMProv nights, fall performances, spring musicals, golf matches, wrestling matches, swim meets, track and field events, soccer games, football games, tennis matches, volleyball games, community nights, art galleries, classroom projects, dance performances, cheerleading competitions, parades, softball games, drama clu...

On Thursday, I visited Cary Elementary School and was able to observe students participating in an United Arts Artists in Schools Event-Mosaic Math Workshop led by Artist Jeannette Brossart . The students learned and shared information about mosaics, arrays, tesserae, tessellation, fractions, area, perimeter and more! They were able to create their own mosaics on a computer. A huge thank you to Mrs. Schmitt for providing such a welcoming classroom environment. Later on Thursday, I attended the Finals of the 4A NCHSAA States Swim Meet. It was exciting to see all the fast swimming, cheering, and swimmers breaking records. Congratulations to the 4A Runner-Ups for Women's Swimming and Diving-Green Hope High School and the 4A State Champions for Men's Swimming and Diving-Green Hope High School! On Saturday, I will be attending the Kingswood Elementary School Beautification Day. This week as a Board, we had one meeting: Facilities Committee Meeting. At the Wednesday, February 9th Fac...
