On Wednesday, I started my day at the Cary Chamber of Commerce's Eye Opener Breakfast with guest speaker Superintendent Catherine Truitt. Several items were discussed from funding to Operation Polaris to expanding postsecondary opportunities for students. Visit this link to learn more about Operation Polaris. Later on Wednesday, I attended the virtual NC DHHS Fireside Chat with Dr. Cohen, Joshua Cureton, Harley Powell, and Ive Jones. The Delta Variant and vaccines were discussed. After the fireside chat, I attended the disAbility Resource Center for the 31st Anniversary of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) virtual event: Unspeakable The Story of Junius Wilson. On Monday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting. On Thursday, I attended the Raleigh Chamber's State of the City, County, and Schools. To read more about the event and to access the agenda, click here . Thursday evening, I attended the virtual HighSchoolOT Honors event. Congratulations to all the high school athletes, coaches, athletic directors, and mascots that were finalists, and congrats to the winners! In District 9, Cary High School's Wrestling Coach, Jerry Winterton, won the Lifetime Achievement Award. Click here to watch the recording of the event. This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, July 20th Work Session: Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics, and AJ Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources; provided an update on the 2021-22 WCPSS Virtual Academy Program Planning including teacher recruitment. I kicked off my week with a D9 Connection Meeting on Sunday. On Tuesday, I visited East Cary Middle. Students were participating in "Would you Rather" and providing evidence, discussing observations and inferences, reviewing how an activity went in class the day before, providing feedback to peers, and more. On Thursday, I spent time at West Cary Middle. Students were designing an app (Yes... a real app!), creating birthday cards, working with fractions, preparing a career slideshow, and learning about the purposes of writing. On Friday, I wrapped up my week at Northwoods Elementary. There were several activities underway-- Letterland, counting, addition, working with math manipulatives, and learning about Penguins! The amount of energy I continue to see in our Summer Learning Program is awesome. Thank you to all the families for allowing your children to participate in Camp WCPSS. What a fabulous week! On Tuesday, I visited Green Hope High and Davis Drive Elementary. Summer Academy and Camp WCPSS were underway with a variety of activities- building towers, hula hoops and basketball in the gym, GradPoint, recess, and more. On Wednesday, I was at Cary High School. The Summer IMPStitute Camp and Online Credit Recovery was in progress. Students were making pasta (Yummy!), had played Kahoot, and were preparing for a dissection activity in science. On Friday, I visited Farmington Woods Elementary. The third week of Camp WCPSS was wrapping up. Students were learning about -ip with song and movement, expressing their joy about seeing their principal, and exploring outside on the playground.  A HUGE shoutout to all the staff working to keep students engaged during the Summer Learning Programs. On Monday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting. I also attended the Carnegie Forum-- Better Together: Elevating Family-School Partnerships. To watch the recording of the forum, click here . On Wednesday, I visited Reedy Creek Middle School. It was great to see Camp WCPSS students and staff in action! On Thursday, I attend the Summer Writing Slam at the SE Raleigh YMCA. The students did an outstanding job sharing their powerful work. This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Student Achievement Committee and Policy Committee. At the Monday, June 28th Student Achievement Committee: La'Kesha Spruill-Roberts, Director, Intervention and Advanced Learning, presented an AIG Programming update. Lizzie Casey, Northwoods Elementary School's AIG Teacher and Literacy Coach, provided insight into real-life implementation of AIG services.  Brad McMillian, Data Research & Accountability Department, provided an update on Testing and Accountability.
