 This week there were multiple meetings: Student Achievement Committee, Policy Committee, Safety and Security Committee, and the Board Advisory Council (BAC) Meeting for District 9. There was an UNPRECEDENTED event that occurred at the BAC. Please make sure you read about it below. At the Monday, January 25th Student Achievement Committee Meeting: Emily Mountford, Senior Director, Office of Professional Learning; and Phillip Echols, Senior Administrator, Office of Professional Learning, provided an update to the Board on multiple issues: Departmental Collaboration, Online and Blending Learning Courses, Professional Learning Teams (PLTs), Instructional Assistant Empowerment, and Adult Social and Emotional Learning Courses. This week, we had two meetings on Tuesday, January 19th, the Work Session and the Board Meeting. At the January 19th Work Session: Wade Martin, Assistant Superintendent for School Choice, Planning and Assignment, Kimberly Lane, Senior Director – Magnet and Curriculum Enhancement Programs, and Tamani Anderson-Powell, Director – Magnet and Curriculum Enhancement Programs provided an update regarding the district's Magnet and Early College recruitment for 2020-2021. Their presentation can be viewed here. Danya Perry, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity-Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce presented information about the A Better Wake initiative. January 15, 2021

This week I had several meetings. On Wednesday, January 13th, I met with Wake NCEA to listen to feedback and learn more about their staff survey and results. Later that day, I had the first D9 Connection Virtual Meeting for community members in District 9. I appreciated hearing directly from parents, concerned citizens, and educators.  At the Thursday, January 14th, Special Called Board Meeting: Staff presented their considerations, context, and recommendation for Second Semester. Staff recommended remote learning for all WCPSS students until at least mid-February. To view the presentation click here . The board approved the staff recommendation. We have a Special Called Board Meeting tomorrow, Thursday, January 14th, at 3:30 pm. This week, we had two meetings on Tuesday, January 5th, the Work Session and our Board Meeting.  At the January 5th Work Session: Dr. Zimmerman provided an update from the ABC Science Collaborative. Mr. Koh, the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, and Ms. Creech, the Director of Health Services, presented an update on case investigation and contact tracing. They also reviewed the decision-making process for when a classroom, grade level, or school might close. Dr. Muttillo, the Assistant Superintendent of HR, shared the substitute teacher survey results and details about the new sub recruitment plan and proposed incentive plan. Mr. Coe, the Director of Athletics, and Mr. Fitts, Senior Director of Middle School Programs, provided an update on high school and middle school athletics.  Happy New Year! I hope everyone has taken time to relax over the holiday break.  Earlier this week, I was able to complete the North Carolina School Boards Association's Core Training. The 12 hours of training included: Leadership--basic dos and don'ts, board and superintendent roles and responsibilities, school finance, and school board liability, Advocacy --board members' advocacy work, update on current legislative issues, NCSBA's member-approved legislative agenda, and tips on effectively engaging legislators, and   School law--NC's open meetings and public records law, entering and amending contracts, the board's oversight role in personnel and finance, maintaining legally-compliant policies for schools, required ethics training, and parliamentary procedure.
