May 28, 2021

On Monday, I attended the Board of Commissioners Work Session for the presentation of the WCPSS Budget. On Wednesday, I celebrated the seniors at Vernon Malone College and Career Academy. Their individual graduation ceremonies were awesome. Later that evening, I attended the Green Hope Signing Day Event. It was exciting to see student athletes officially making their college commitments. On Thursday, I attended the Wake STEM Early College High School graduation. Then I visited the Connections Academy for their End-of-Year Celebration. That evening, I attended the WCPSS Future Teachers Signing Event. Thursday was full of excitement and opportunities to recognize students for their hard work.

This week as a Board, we had the following meetings: Student Achievement Committee and Safety and Security Committee.

At the Monday, May 24th Student Achievement Committee Meeting:

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics; and Michele Woodson, Senior Director, K-12 Curriculum Development; presented information about the resources and support that will be provided for teaching and learning for the 2021-22 school year. To view their presentation, click here. It was made clear that curriculum can be supplemented as needed. Additionally, I did ask about seeking specific, ongoing parent and student feedback.

  • La' Kesha Spruill-Roberts, Director, Intervention and Advanced Learning; and Drew Cook provided a presentation about the role of an AIG teacher, AIG identification (portfolio process), NC DPI Call to Action, Talent Development, Talent Unleashed, and more. At the Wednesday, May 26th Safety and Security Committee Meeting:

  • Kendrick Scott, Senior Administrator, Office of Security; presented details about the training provided to SROs, which included information about the WCPSS SRO Summit and Guidance Session. To view the presentation, use this link.

Some of the topics on the agenda are technical corrections to recently-approved Board Policy: 1710 Prohibition Against Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying and Board Policy 1720: Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying Complaint Process, and multiple policies being presented for first or second readings, amendment to Tharrington Smith contract related to board electoral redistricting, contract for on-loan agreement with Central Carolina RESA, name for the new middle school in Research Triangle Park adjacent to Morrisville, and more.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, April 20th Finance Committee: David Neter, Chief Operating Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented the budget questions submitted by Board Members and provided answers. On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link .
