On Thursday, I attended Cary High School's Midyear Graduation. It was an honor to be able to celebrate the graduates' accomplishments. Congrats grads and families! On Friday and Saturday, I had planned to attend the WCPSS Cheer Competition (Middle and High School) at Green Hope High School; however, due to WCPSS canceling all extracurricular activities on Saturday, the event has been postponed.

This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Special Called Board Meeting and Policy Committee. The Student Achievement Committee Meeting was canceled due to WCPSS being closed.

At the Tuesday, January 25th Special Called Board Meeting:

*The Board voted unanimously that Board members will not engage in any communications with anyone other than staff or counsel about the District 4 vacancy.  Board members will forward to the full Board any information received regarding the District 4 vacancy.  If you have questions about the vacancy, you are free to send an email to district4vacancy@wcpss.net.

At the Tuesday, January 25th Policy Committee Meeting:

  • Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, and Michael Pesce, Director, Social Work; presented Board Policy 4125: Students Experiencing Homelessness (Students in Transition) as a revised policy. There were some edits suggested by the Board. This revised policy will be brought to the full Board for 1st reading. To view the policy, use this link.

  • Paul Koh and Michael Pesce presented Board Policy 4240-7312: Child Abuse and Related Threats to Child Safety as a revised policy. There were a few edits suggested by the Board including some information to include in an R & P for this policy. This revised policy will be brought to the full Board for 1st reading.   • Paul Koh and Michael Pesce presented Board Policy 4400: Attendance as a revised policy. The Board provided feedback and there will be some information moved to the R &P for this policy. This revised policy will be brought to the full Board for 1st reading. Use this link to access the policy.

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics; and Deran Coe, Director, Athletics; provided information about the District's request to continue to waive Section F of Board Policy 6860: Co-Curricular Activities and Athletics for Spring 2022. This request will be brought to the full Board at our February 1st Board Meeting. To view this policy, click here.

  • Paul Koh and Crystal Reardon, School Counseling; presented Board Policy 3610: Counseling Program as a revised policy. Based on feedback from the Board, this policy will return for review at our February 22nd Policy Committee Meeting. Use this link to access the policy.

  • Paul Koh and Crystal Reardon presented Board Policy 4700: Student Records as a revised policy.  This policy will be brought to the full Board for 1st reading. Click here to read the policy.

  • Board Policy 3460: Graduation Requirements and Board Policy 3460 R&P: Acceptance of High School Credit were moved to the February 22nd Policy Committee Meeting.

This week, we had two meetings on Tuesday, January 5th, the Work Session and our Board Meeting.  At the January 5th Work Session: Dr. Zimmerman provided an update from the ABC Science Collaborative. Mr. Koh, the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, and Ms. Creech, the Director of Health Services, presented an update on case investigation and contact tracing. They also reviewed the decision-making process for when a classroom, grade level, or school might close. Dr. Muttillo, the Assistant Superintendent of HR, shared the substitute teacher survey results and details about the new sub recruitment plan and proposed incentive plan. Mr. Coe, the Director of Athletics, and Mr. Fitts, Senior Director of Middle School Programs, provided an update on high school and middle school athletics.
