October 28, 2022

On Monday, I visited Green Hope High School and attended part of 3rd period and all of 4th period's Civic Classes. I, along with Representative Gale Adcock, spoke with students and answered questions related to their class campaign project. Monday evening was D9's Board Advisory Council Meeting (Please see below for more information). On Wednesday, I attended West Cary Middle School's Fall Orchestra Concert. Great job Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Orchestra students and Director-Dr. Nessim. It was great to be able to check out the Student Art Gallery after the concert. Thank you to Mr. Miller, Art Teacher, for showcasing the students' artwork. On Thursday, I attended Green Hope High School Chorus Program's Turning Over a New Leaf Fall Concert. Amazing job musicians, Director- Mr. Botwick, and Pianist- Ms. Myers. On Friday, I attended Cary High School's football game. On Saturday, I will be attending the 63rd Annual Cary Band Day! 

This week as a Board we had two meetings: Student Achievement Committee and Policy Committee.

At the Monday, October 24th Student Achievement Committee Meeting:

  • Brad McMillen, Assistant Superintendent, Data, Research and Accountability; provided an overview of  WCPSS' assessments results and graduation rates. Click here to access the presentation.

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics; Michele Woodson, Senior Director, K-12 Curriculum Development; Christina Zukowski, Director, K-12 Mathematics; presented information about the procurement process for district math curriculum, shared information about national, state, and local instructional resources, and facilitated small groups with Board Members to clarify our current and future desired state. At the Monday, October 24th District 9 Board Advisory Committee Meeting:
  • Susan Pullium, Senior Director, Office of Student Assignment; presented information about Draft 2 of the 2023-24 Enrollment Plan.

  • Susan Pullium and Glenn Carrozza, Assistant Superintendent for School Choice, Planning, and Assignment; answered questions regarding Draft 2 of the 2023-24 Enrollment Plan.

At the Tuesday, October 25th Policy Committee Meeting:
  • Dr. Chavis, Assistant Superintendent, Equity Affairs; Dr. Caswell, WCPSS Principal; Teresa Jones, WCPSS Parent; Jodie Damrauer, WCPSS Counselor; Christina Gordon, WCPSS Parent and Teacher; and Aaron Ng, WCPSS Student; presented information related to the Equity Policy. There were a few additional amendments made to the policy. The policy will be presented to the Board for first reading next week. Use this link to access the policy that was discussed.   • Tuesday, November 1st at 3:30 pm- Work Session. The items on the agenda are proposed changes to the 2023-24 instructional Calendars, 2022 Summer Learning Update, and Board discussion of Policy 1710/4021/7230 Prohibition Against Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying.   • Tuesday, November 1st at 5:30 pm- Board Meeting*. Some of the items on the agenda are Board Policy 3420 and Board Policy 1150 and more. Use this link to access the agenda.

On Wednesday, I started my day at the Cary Chamber of Commerce's Eye Opener Breakfast with guest speaker Superintendent Catherine Truitt. On Wednesday, I visited Salem Elementary and provided assistance during carpool at dismissal. On Thursday, I attended the Wake County State of the County Address. You can watch the recording of the State of the County at  this link . This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, November 2nd Work Session: Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, shared the history and status of the School Mental Health Improvement Plan. Paul Koh and Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, provided an update on the voluntary COVID testing program and the federal mandates regarding staff testing and vaccination status. The Memorandum of Agreement with MAKO Medical will be presented for Board approval on November 16th. This is my final blog as the D9 Representative of the Wake County Board of Education. I want to thank all the students, families, school staff, and community members that have taken the time to email, speak with me over the phone, attend a D9 Connection Meeting, attend a Board Advisory Council Meeting or attend any Board Meetings. I appreciate hearing directly from you and am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve District 9. While serving as the D9's representative, I have spend a significant amount of time attending events at our wonderful schools: beautification days, athletic signing events, band competitions and concerts, orchestra concerts, choral concerts, IMProv nights, fall performances, spring musicals, golf matches, wrestling matches, swim meets, track and field events, soccer games, football games, tennis matches, volleyball games, community nights, art galleries, classroom projects, dance performances, cheerleading competitions, parades, softball games, drama clu...
