October 7, 2022

On Wednesday, I attended the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Dillard Drive Middle School. It was a fantastic evening with special guests, student speakers, performances, and more. On Thursday, I enjoyed celebrating the Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year Finalists. Congratulations to the Principal of the Year- Dr. Williams of Bugg Magnet Elementary- and the Assistant Principal of the Year- Mary Taylor of Brooks Magnet Elementary! On Friday evening, I will be attending the Cary High vs. Green Hope Football game.

This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, October 4th Work Session:

  • Dr. Robinson, Chief of Staff and Strategic Planning; Dr. Nash, Research Triangle Institute; and Michael Martin, Research Triangle Institute; presented the Strategic Plan Framework for discussion.   • Dr. Robinson presented the Ombuds Position draft Job Description for discussion and feedback. There were several changes suggested by the Board. Use this link to view the draft presented.

  • Dr. Chavis, Assistant Superintendent, Equity Affairs; presented a revised draft of the Equity Policy. The Board provided feedback and some changes requested. Click here to view the presentation. Use this link to view the revised draft.

At the Tuesday, October 4th Board Meeting:

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics; Shaneeka Moore-Lawrence, Senior Director for K-12 Instructional Supports; James D. (JD) Freeman, Vice President of the Wake County Indian Education Parent Committee; shared an Indigenous Peoples' Day presentation. Use this link to access the presentation.

  • Superintendent Moore provided an overview of the items discussed during the Work Session: Strategic Plan Framework, Ombuds Job Description, and revised draft of the Equity Policy.

  • Betty Parker, Senior Director, Real Estate Services; presented three items for Board Approval: First Amendment to Joint Use Agreement with Town of Morrisville: Cedar Fork Elementary School, Interlocal Agreement with Town of Morrisville and Wake Tech Community College: Northwestern Wake County/Morrisville Area Future High School Site (H-14), and Lease with Town of Morrisville: Future Fire Station.   • Dr. Lane, Senior Director of Magnet and Curriculum Enhancement; shared that WCPSS secured a $13.5 million Magnet Schools Assistance Program Grant from the U.S. Department of Education for use at four schools. The newly renamed schools supported by this grant include: Centennial Campus Center for Innovation Magnet Middle School, East Millbrook Magnet Middle School Academy of Arts & Design, Wake Forest iSTEM Magnet Elementary School, and Wildwood Forest Magnet Elementary School Academy of Arts & Design.

  • Dr. Robinson presented the Strategic Plan Framework for Board approval. It was approved 7-0. Use this link to access the presentation.

Next week as a Board, we have no meetings. Please note that our Tuesday, November 15th Board Meeting has been moved to Wednesday, November 16th.

November 5, 2021

On Wednesday, I visited Salem Elementary and provided assistance during carpool at dismissal. On Thursday, I attended the Wake County State of the County Address. You can watch the recording of the State of the County at  this link . This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, November 2nd Work Session: Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, shared the history and status of the School Mental Health Improvement Plan. Paul Koh and Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, provided an update on the voluntary COVID testing program and the federal mandates regarding staff testing and vaccination status. The Memorandum of Agreement with MAKO Medical will be presented for Board approval on November 16th. This is my final blog as the D9 Representative of the Wake County Board of Education. I want to thank all the students, families, school staff, and community members that have taken the time to email, speak with me over the phone, attend a D9 Connection Meeting, attend a Board Advisory Council Meeting or attend any Board Meetings. I appreciate hearing directly from you and am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve District 9.
