November 4, 2022

On Sunday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting. On Wednesday, I attended the Cary High and Athens Drive High School's Fall Orchestra Concert. Splendid job musicians and Director-Mrs. Culbreth. On Thursday, I attended Green Hope's phenomenal production of Metamorphoses. On Friday, I attended Round One of the Football playoffs at Apex High School. Best of luck in Round 2 Apex!

This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, November 1st Work Session:

  • Glenn Carrozza, Assistant Superintendent, School Choice, Planning and Assignment; and Tamani Anderson Powell, Director, Magnet and Curriculum Enhancement Programs; presented the proposed changes to the 2023-24 Traditional, Modified, and Year-Round Instructional Calendars. These calendars will be presented for Board approval at a future Board Meeting. 

  • Dr. Moore-Lawrence, Senior Director, K-12 Instructional Supports; Michele Woodson, Senior Director; K-12 Curriculum Development; Jo Anne Honeycutt, Director, Career and Technical Education; provided an overview of the 2022 Summer Programs and a preview of the 2023 Summer Programs.   • Dr. Robinson, Chief of Staff and Strategic Planning; Dr. Crain, Director, Strategy and Policy; led the Board in a discussion of Board Policy 1710/4021/7230. Use this link to view the policy.

At the Tuesday, November 1st, Board Meeting:
  • Tasha Haynes, Senior Administrator for Magnet Recruitment and Grants, Tamani Anderson Powell, and a student from Enloe High School kicked off the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Magnet Schools of Choice.

  • Dr. Moore-Lawrence, Dr. Emanuel, President, Parent Advisory Committee; and Becky Foote, Senior Administrator, Title I; presented information about National American Indian Heritage Month. Two students from Fuquay Varina Elementary School performed an American Indian Style Woman's Dance (Hoop) and were accompanied by their father, Dr. Watson, playing drums and singing.   • Superintendent Moore provided an overview of the items discussed in our Work Session: proposed changes to the 2023-24 Instructional Calendars, Summer Programming Updates, and discussion of Board Policy 1710/4021/7230.

  • Dr. Chavis, Assistant Superintendent, Equity Affairs, presented Board Policy 1150: Equity for first reading. The Board approved the policy 9-0. Click here to read the policy.

  • Wednesday, November 9th at 3:00 pm- Facilities Committee. Items on the agenda are: Transportation Center Project Update, Area Crowding Considerations 101, CAMPO and the Safe Routes to School Initiative, 2023 CIP Plan: Introduction, New Business, and Facilities Three Months Forecast.   • Thursday, November 10th at 5:30 pm- Public Hearing on Student Assignment Plan. On Wednesday, I started my day at the Cary Chamber of Commerce's Eye Opener Breakfast with guest speaker Superintendent Catherine Truitt. November 5, 2021

On Wednesday, I visited Salem Elementary and provided assistance during carpool at dismissal. On Thursday, I attended the Wake County State of the County Address. You can watch the recording of the State of the County at  this link . This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, November 2nd Work Session: Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, shared the history and status of the School Mental Health Improvement Plan. Paul Koh and Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, provided an update on the voluntary COVID testing program and the federal mandates regarding staff testing and vaccination status. The Memorandum of Agreement with MAKO Medical will be presented for Board approval on November 16th. I did ask if a pool is positive, do students have the option to have their follow-up tests completed at a facility of their choice. District staff is checking ...

December 2, 2022

This is my final blog as the D9 Representative of the Wake County Board of Education. I want to thank all the students, families, school staff, and community members that have taken the time to email, speak with me over the phone, attend a D9 Connection Meeting, attend a Board Advisory Council Meeting or attend any Board Meetings. I appreciate hearing directly from you and am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve District 9. While serving as the D9's representative, I have spend a significant amount of time attending events at our wonderful schools: beautification days, athletic signing events, band competitions and concerts, orchestra concerts, choral concerts, IMProv nights, fall performances, spring musicals, golf matches, wrestling matches, swim meets, track and field events, soccer games, football games, tennis matches, volleyball games, community nights, art galleries, classroom projects, dance performances, cheerleading competitions, parades, softball games, drama clu...
