This week, as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, February 16th: the Budget/Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, February 16th, Budget/Finance Committee Meeting:

  • David Neter, Chief Business Officer; Mark Winters, Finance Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented information in preparation for 2021-22 proposed operating budget. Staff shared details about the current landscape and the multi-year funding initiatives previously establish by the Board: non-certified staff compensation, maintenance and operations to maintain school facilities, student social emotional support, and instructional support technicians. The Board provided input regarding the priorities. To view their presentation, click here.

At the Tuesday, February 16th, Work Session:
  • Lloyd Gardner, Chief of Staff, and Tim Simmons, Chief Communications Officer, shared information about the legislative platforms of the North Carolina School Boards Association, the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, the NC State Board of Education/Department of Public Instruction, and WakeEd Partnership. Then the Board began reviewing their legislative priorities. You can access the presentation here

  • Wade Martin, Assistant Superintendent School Choice, Planning and Assignment; and Emily Lucas, Chief Financial Officer, Wake County Government; presented updated long range membership projections approved by County and WCPSS staff.  Use this link to view their documents. I requested exit survey information received from families leaving WCPSS be shared with the Board. I am hopeful that being responsive to feedback can help even more families choose WCPSS for their children.

  • Dr. Edward McFarland, Chief Academic Advancement Officer; Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics; Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent, Student Support Services; Dr. Ashlie Thompson, Central Area Superintendent; Dr. Elena Ashburn, Principal, Broughton High School; and Annette Thornhill, Community Liaison, Retired Former Social Worker of the Year; presented information about current supports being provided to students and future supports that will be provided. • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics; Wade Martin, Assistant Superintendent, School Choice, Planning and Assignment; and Brian Pittman, Senior Director, High School Programs; shared the recommended changes to the 2020-21 instructional calendars. You can view their presentation at this link.

  • Due to running out of time, some of the questions from Board members were held until the Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, February 16th, Board Meeting:
  • Superintendent Moore presented a brief update on Second Semester specifically addressing vaccinations for school staff and pending legislation. During this time, Board member questions from the Work Session were addressed as well.

  • Dr. Rodney Trice, Assistant Superintendent for Equity Affairs, shared with the Board a student-created video about Black History Month. To view this presentation, please go to 59:10 of the Board Meeting recording.

  • Board Policy 6000: Support Services; Board approved on the first reading. To review this policy, click here.

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics; Wade Martin, Assistant Superintendent, School Choice, Planning and Assignment; and Brian Pittman, Senior Director, High School Programs; presented the updated 2020-21 instructional calendars for Board approval. The calendars were approved by the Board. I, personally, voted against the changes and expressed concerns regarding the impact to cohort three. I had hoped we could adjust the calendars without having one cohort carry a burden such as a five-week period from one rotation of in-person instruction to the next. The new calendars can be found at this link.

On Thursday, I visited Cary Elementary School and was able to observe students participating in an United Arts Artists in Schools Event-Mosaic Math Workshop led by Artist Jeannette Brossart . The students learned and shared information about mosaics, arrays, tesserae, tessellation, fractions, area, perimeter and more! They were able to create their own mosaics on a computer. A huge thank you to Mrs. Schmitt for providing such a welcoming classroom environment. Later on Thursday, I attended the Finals of the 4A NCHSAA States Swim Meet. It was exciting to see all the fast swimming, cheering, and swimmers breaking records.
