 As a Board, we had two meetings this week on Tuesday, April 6th: Work Session and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, April 6th Work Session:

  • Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, shared an update on current recruitment efforts for teachers. 

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics, and Alicia Miller, Director, Curriculum and Instruction; presented an overview of District staff's current recommendations and planning for the 2021-22 Virtual Academy including operational considerations, key factors, and a general timeline for next steps.

At the Tuesday, April 6th Board Meeting:
  • Superintendent Moore and David Neter, Chief Business Officer, presented the proposed 2021-22 budget. It is a $1,938,822,321 total operating budget. There are requests for the County to make the $11.9 million one-time increase (from 2020-21) recurring and an increase of $16.3 million in County appropriation.   • Superintendent Moore provided a brief summary of the updates received in the Work Session.

  • David Neter, Chief Business Officer, and Bob Snidemiller, Senior Director for Transportation; presented the proposed 2021-22 bell schedules for approval. The Board approved the bell schedules 9-0. To view the bell schedules, click here.

  • David Neter, Chief Business Officer, and Mark Winters, Finance Officer; presented a recommendation of an external financial audit contract with Dixon, Hughes, and Goodman, LLP. To access an overview of the contract, use this link. The Board approved the contract 9-0.

  • Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, recommended an extension of the Emergency Sick Leave Provision of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) through June 30, 2021. The Board approved the extension 9-0.

On Thursday, April 8th, District 9 had a BAC Meeting.

At the Thursday, April 8th BAC Meeting:
  • Marlo Gaddis, Chief Technology Officer, assisted with registration, tech support during and before the meeting, and more.

  • I provided a brief Board update and reminders about our next BAC meeting on May 13th and the next D9 connection meeting this Sunday, April 11th at 4 pm.
  • Douglas Congdon, Program Executive, Facilities Design and Construction; provided a detailed presentation on the existing school prioritization rubric.

  • Nathan Slavik, Senior Director, Maintenance and Operations; presented information about maintenance and operations including work orders, priorities, and more.

Next week, as a Board, we have the following meeting (Please remember the meeting will be live on the WCPSS YouTube Channel.):
  • Wednesday, April 14th at 3 pm: Facilities Committee. The agenda has not posted at the time of this blog entry. When it is posted, it can be accessed at this link.
Members of the public can request to attend the Facilities Committee Meeting in person. To access the Google Form to complete, click here, scroll down, and select #6. The form should go live by Monday, April 12th at 3 pm and close at 5 pm on Tuesday, April 13th.

I am seeking direct public feedback on Superintendent Moore's proposed 2021-22 budget. Please complete this form. The Google Form has a link to the budget for you to review and a place to provide any comments you may have regarding the budget.

This week, we had two meetings on Tuesday, January 5th, the Work Session and our Board Meeting.  At the January 5th Work Session: Dr. Zimmerman provided an update from the ABC Science Collaborative. Mr. Koh, the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, and Ms. Creech, the Director of Health Services, presented an update on case investigation and contact tracing. They also reviewed the decision-making process for when a classroom, grade level, or school might close. Dr. Muttillo, the Assistant Superintendent of HR, shared the substitute teacher survey results and details about the new sub recruitment plan and proposed incentive plan. Mr. Coe, the Director of Athletics, and Mr. Fitts, Senior Director of Middle School Programs, provided an update on high school and middle school athletics. On Thursday, I attended Cary High School's Midyear Graduation. It was an honor to be able to celebrate the graduates' accomplishments. Congrats grads and families! On Friday and Saturday, I had planned to attend the WCPSS Cheer Competition (Middle and High School) at Green Hope High School; however, due to WCPSS canceling all extracurricular activities on Saturday, the event has been postponed. This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Special Called Board Meeting and Policy Committee. The Student Achievement Committee Meeting was canceled due to WCPSS being closed. At the Tuesday, January 25th Special Called Board Meeting: *The Board voted unanimously that Board members will not engage in any communications with anyone other than staff or counsel about the District 4 vacancy.  Board members will forward to the full Board any information received regarding the District 4 vacancy.  If you have questions about the vacancy, you are free to send an email to district4vacancy@wcpss...
