August 13, 2021

On Tuesday, I met with Joey Huot to learn more about the Fayetteville Marksmen's opportunities for our students: College and Career Fair, School Day Game, and various Performance and Spirit Nights. Later on Tuesday, I attended the Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC) virtual film screening and community conversation about "To Serve and Protect." To learn more about the event, click here. On Wednesday, I attended the Cary Chamber of Commerce 2021 Leadership Dinner. On Saturday, I will be wrapping up my week at Northwoods Elementary Beautification Day.

This week as a Board, we had one meeting: Facilities Committee.

At the Wednesday, August 11th Facilities Committee Meeting:

  • Douglas Congdon, Facilities Design and Construction, Program Executive; presented an update that included projects completed in the last two years, projects in progress, and projects specific to the FY22 Appropriation. On Monday, August 16th, this presentation will be provided to the Wake County Board of Commissioners. The Commissioners will also be voting on FY22 Appropriation at the meeting on August 16th.   • Marcella Rorie, Senior Director of Long Range Planning, provided an overview and visualization of the Facilities Utilization Report (FUR). To view the presentation, click here.

  • Chris Heagarty facilitated a discussion about possible topics for future Facilities Committee Meetings.

This week as a Board, we have the following meetings (Please remember these meetings will be live streamed on the WCPSS YouTube Channel.):
  • Tuesday, August 17th at 2:00 pm: Finance Committee. Use this link to view the agenda. There will be an overview of WCPSS Employee Benefits and a review of the 2021-22 proposed state budgets.

  • Tuesday, August 17th at 3:30 pm: Work Session. To access the agenda, click here. The topic on the agenda is Opening of School 2021-22, which will include a wide range of information related to transportation, staffing, family engagement activities, and health guidance procedures and protocols. 

  • Tuesday, August 17th at 5:30 pm: Board Meeting. Use this link to view the agenda. There are several items related to finance and facilities, data use agreement with the ABC Science Collaborative, and more.
This week, the Board was informed of the following changes related to attending Board meetings. Face coverings are now required for those attending Board of Education meetings. Board members, WCPSS employees, and the public must wear a face covering even if vaccinated. If you are unable to wear a face covering because of a disability or other reason, you may watch the livestream or listen by phone. Approximately 24 hours prior to the start of a Board Meeting, there will be a phone number posted on this website to access live audio of the meeting.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, April 20th Finance Committee: David Neter, Chief Operating Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented the budget questions submitted by Board Members and provided answers. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning.
