September 3, 2021

On Sunday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting. On Monday, I met with a Certified Industrial Hygienist to learn more about the role of an Industrial Hygienist. To read the American Industrial Hygiene Association's guidance for schools, click here. On Thursday, I visited Briarcliff Elementary. I really enjoyed seeing multiple outdoor learning spaces being utilized by students and staff (snack and story time), students collaborating with partners, and some great artwork. 

This week as a Board, we had one meeting: Policy Committee.

At the Tuesday, August 31st Policy Committee Meeting:

  • Dr. Julie Crain, Director of Strategy and Policy, presented Board Policy 6300: Goals of Student Transportation Services for discussion. I did ask for retaining to be added to #5 because keeping our current staff and those we recruit is vital. The committee did support the addition. This policy will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading. To review what was presented, use this link.

  • Eric Fitts, Senior Director, Middle School Programs, requested the Board waive the attendance component regarding eligibility for student athletes in high and middle schools (Board Policy 6860) for the Fall Semester of 2021. This will be presented for Board approval at the September 7th Board Meeting. Click here to view Board Policy 6860.

  • Tim Simmons, Chief of Communications, presented Board Policy 5210: Distribution and Display of Non-School Material for discussion. This policy will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading. To access Board Policy 5210, use this link.

  • Dr. Paul Walker, Senior Director, Student Due Process and Alternative Education, presented revised Board Policy 4309: Student Behavior - Student Code of Conduct for discussion. A preamble will be added to Section III-9 to reflect expectations and define consent. This will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading. This week as a Board, we have the following meetings (Please remember these meetings will be streamed live on the WCPSS YouTube Channel.):
  • Tuesday, September 7th at 3:00 pm- Work Session. The agenda can be accessed here. Some of the topics to be discussed are transportation, staffing, family engagement activities, and health guidance procedures and protocols. 

  • Tuesday, September 7th at 5:30 pm- Board Meeting. Use this link to access the agenda. A few of the items on the agenda are waiver of Section F (attendance requirement) of Board Policy 6860 for middle and high school athletes for the fall semester of 2021 and the local face covering policy.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, April 20th Finance Committee: David Neter, Chief Operating Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented the budget questions submitted by Board Members and provided answers. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . April 30, 2021

On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning.
