On Monday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting. On Thursday, there was a D9 BAC Meeting (Read below for more details.). On Friday evening, I will be attending Green Hope High School's musical-Freaky Friday.

This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Student Achievement Committee and Policy Committee.

At the Monday, March 28th Student Achievement Committee Meeting:

  • Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services; Paul Walker, Senior Director, Student Due Process; Ken Jorgensen, Director, Alternative Education and Extended Learning Programs; provided an overview of the District's Alternative Education Programs, data, and the beginning work on a five-year plan for Alternative Education Programs. To access their presentation, use this link. I did express my concern about the need for programs around the district.

  • Brian Pittman, Senior Director, High School; Crystal Reardon, Director, School Counseling; and Jo Anne Honeycutt, Director, Career and Technical Education; presented information about WCPSS' efforts to support graduation, graduation data, graduation plans for 2022, and opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom within a Career & Technical Education framework. I did mention my request to have school specific data about the number of students graduating and using that information to help guide some of the Alternative Education planning.

At the Tuesday, March 29th Policy Committee Meeting:
  • Dr. Gardner, Chief of Staff; and Dr. Crain, Director, Strategy & Policy; presented revised Board Policy 2302: Remote Participation in Board Meetings. Revisions reflect updates made by the North Carolina School Boards Association and WCPSS staff. This policy will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading.   • Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources; and Kendra Hill, Senior Director, Employee Relations; presented revised Board Policy 7100: Recruitment and Selection of Personnel. This policy will be presented for first reading at a future Board Meeting. Use this link to review the revised policy.

  • Mark Winters, Finance Officer; Debra Wallace, Senior Director, Purchasing; and Pam Gales, Senior Administrator, Equity Affairs; presented new Board Policy 6402: Participation by Historically Underutilized Businesses.  The policy was created by the NC School Boards Association as part of their Policies to Lead the Schools Manual. This policy will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading. Click here to read this new policy.

  • Mark Winters and Debra Wallace presented new Board Policy 6421: Preaudit and Disbursement Certifications. This policy was created by the NC School Boards Association as part of their Policies to Lead the Schools Manual. When adopted it will replace current policies 8610 Pre-Audit Certification and 8621 Certification for Disbursement. The policy will be presented for first reading at a future Board Meeting.   • Mark Winters and Debra Wallace presented new Board Policy 6441/9121: Bidders’ List.  The policy was created by the NC School Boards Association as part of their Policies to Lead the Schools Manual. It will replace current policy 8351 Maintenance of Bidders’ Lists once adopted. The policy will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading. To read this new policy, click here

  • Mark Winters and Debra Wallace presented new Board Policy 6442: Vendor Lists.  The policy was created by the NC School Boards Association as part of their Policies to Lead the Schools Manual. At the Thursday, March 31st District 9 Board Advisory Council Meeting:
  • I provided a brief Board update.

  • The BAC approved the November 18th BAC Meeting Minutes.

  • David Neter, Chief Business Officer; and Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources; presented information about staffing concerns, vacancy rates, increases in staff compensation, bonuses, and recruitment efforts. 
Next week as a Board, we have the following meetings (Please note these meetings will be streamed live on WCPSS YouTube Channel.):
  • Tuesday, April 5th at 3:00 pm- Work Session. Items on the agenda are the 2022 Cost Model and Executive Summary Update, Existing School Renovation/Replacement Prioritization Rubric, Gaggle Pilot, and Student Engagement Team Grant. To access the agenda, click here.

  • Tuesday, April 5th at 5:30 pm- Board Meeting*. Some of the items on the agenda are the Superintendent's Proposed Budget for 2022-23, Local Face Covering Policy, 2022-23 Early College Instructional Calendars, and Method of Electing Board Members. Use this link to view the agenda.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, April 20th Finance Committee: David Neter, Chief Operating Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented the budget questions submitted by Board Members and provided answers. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning.
