April 8, 2022

On Friday, I attended the Cary High School softball game at Green Level. On Saturday, I will be volunteering at Kingswood Elementary's Second Saturday Spruce Up Event.

This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, April 5th Work Session:

  • Mark Strickland, Chief of Facilities and Operations; Douglas Congdon, Program Executive, Facilities Design & Construction, and Jack McAleer, Director, Project Controls; presented the 2022 Cost Model and Executive Summary update. To view the presentation, use this link.

  • Douglas Congdon provided an update on the Existing School Renovation/Replacement Prioritization Rubric. Click here to view the presentation. Use this link to access the Top 25 for 2022.

  • Marlo Gaddis, Chief Technology Officer, presented information about the Gaggle Pilot. To view the presentation, click here

  • Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services; and Dr. Pettiford, Senior Director, Counseling and Student Services; provided an overview of the Student Engagement Team Grant.  The pilot model is a joint effort between the WCPSS, Alliance Health, and Wake County Cooperative Extension.  The program provides a system of care and support to students and their families through an intentional, collaborative, and holistic-centered approach. Vance Elementary, Walnut Elementary, Durant Road Middle, and North Garner Middle School will participate in the pilot program. Use this link to access the presentation.

At the Tuesday, April 5th Board Meeting:
  • Superintendent Moore and David Neter, Chief Business Officer, presented the Superintendent's proposed 2022-23 budget for information. To view the presentation, use this link. To read the Superintendent's entire proposed 2022-23 budget, click here.

  • Superintendent Moore provided an update on the items discussed in the Work Session: 2022 Cost Model and Executive Summary update, Existing School Renovation/Replacement Prioritization Rubric, Gaggle Pilot, and the Student Engagement Team Grant.

  • Glenn Carrozza – Assistant Superintendent, School Choice, Planning and Assignment, presented the 2022-23 Early College Instructional Calendars for Board approval. The calendars were approved by the Board 8-0. To access the calendars, click on the following schools to view their approval calendars: KHS, NWCCA, VMCCA, WECHS, and WECIB*, Wake STEM Early College , and Wake Leadership Academies. *Please note that the opening of Wake Early College of Information and Biotechnologies (WECIB) on an Early College calendar is contingent upon The General Assembly approval. If not approved, it may have to revert to a Traditional calendar.

  • Based on a request to have more direction provided to the State Board of Elections regarding the Board's method of election, the Board was presented with an updated resolution to provide specific ways to have the Board return to staggered, four-year terms. The information in the resolution regarding how to return to staggered terms (see page 4, number 6 of the resolution) is based on legal interpretation of Session Law 2013-110 and how the Board previously transitioned to staggered terms.   • Wednesday, April 13th at 3:00 pm- Facilities Committee. The items on the agenda are 2022 Draft Prioritization Followup, 2022 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Process Final Review, New Business, and Facilities Three-Month Forecast. To view the agenda, click here.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, April 20th Finance Committee: David Neter, Chief Operating Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented the budget questions submitted by Board Members and provided answers. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . April 30, 2021

On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning.
