May 13, 2022

On Monday, I visited Northwoods Elementary, met some students, and had the opportunity to sit down and listen to feedback and ideas from a teacher. On Tuesday evening, I attended Cary High School's Drama Club Show, To Art and Beyond. The performance was fantastic! Congratulations to the cast, crew and directors- Maddie Alger and Sam Bryant (both Seniors). On Wednesday, I enjoyed attending the Teacher of the Year Banquet. We celebrated the Diane Kent-Parker First-Year Teacher Award winners, each school's Teacher of the Year, the 20 semifinalists, the 10 finalists, and the 2022-23 WCPSS Teacher of the Year- Caroline Olson. Ms. Olson has been an Extended Content Standards teacher since 2015. Congratulations! On Thursday, I had a blast at Davis Drive Middle School's Spring Dance Show! Excellent performance students and Dance Director-Mrs. Winans. A special shoutout to the dancers in Mr. Geist and Mrs. Stevenson-Bennet's classes. Inclusion rocks! Congratulations to the dancers that were inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. On Friday, I visited Briarcliff Elementary and was able to see all the magnificent art from their International Night! Outstanding jobs students and educators. On Friday evening, I will be attending Cary High School's final IMProv night for this school year.

At the Tuesday, May 10th Board Meeting for Recognition-Spotlight on Seniors:

  • Crystal Reardon, Director, Counseling; Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; and Superintendent Moore recognized 34 Seniors for their journeys of perseverance and commitment to success. It was an honor to celebrate these amazing students. I appreciate Angela Mills, Administrator, Translation and Interpretation Services, for providing interpretation for the event as well. This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, April 20th Finance Committee: David Neter, Chief Operating Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented the budget questions submitted by Board Members and provided answers. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning.
