June 10, 2022

On Monday, I visited Ms. McCaslin's 8th grade class at Mills Park Middle School for student presentations on sustainability. The students had researched concerns, chosen some possible solutions, created models, and did a fantastic job articulating their ideas and findings. On Thursday, I visited Lincoln Heights Environmental Connections Magnet Elementary School to see and learn more about the work being done around sustainability. Laura Wood, the Environmental Connections Integration Specialist, provided a wonderful tour and shared exciting information about the great things happening at Lincoln Heights.  On Friday, I had the honor of attending the Project SEARCH Graduation! Congratulations graduations! On Saturday, I will be attending Phillips HS graduation.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, June 7th Finance Committee:

  • Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; and Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources, provided an overview of school resource allotment and staffing processes. Click here to review the detailed presentation.

At the Tuesday, June 7th Work Session:
  • Dr. Gardner, Chief of Staff and Strategic Planning; Dr. McMillen, Assistant Superintendent, Data, Research, and Accountability, and Dr. Nash, Educational Consultant, RTI Education Services; engaged with the Board to continue setting the foundational work supportive of developing the Strategic Plan. Some of the information discussed was a new core belief proposed, some proposed additions to core belief #4, the themes from stakeholder feedback, focus areas, and more.   • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics; Brian Pittman, Senior Director, High School Program; and Syreeta Smith, Senior Director, Elementary Programs; provided an update on the 2022 summer learning plans. Click here to access their presentation. 

  • Drew Cook and La'Kesha Spruill-Roberts, Director, Intervention and Advanced Learning Services, presented a review of the current AIG Plan and the key components of the draft 2022-25 AIG Plan.   • Drew Cook, Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent, Student Support Services; and Dr. Chavis, Assistant Superintendent, Office of Equity Affairs, provided a follow-up presentation from the April 20, 2022 Student Achievement Committee Meeting on the Comprehensive Plan for Equitable Discipline (CPED). Elisabeth Hinman, ALC Teacher, Wake Forest HS; Kathryn Hutchinson, Principal at Centennial Campus Magnet MS; and Nolan Bryant, Principal at Cary HS, shared detailed information about the amazing work they are doing in their schools. At the Tuesday, June 7th Board Meeting:
  • Drew Cook and Kim Keith, Vice President of Youth Development, YMCA of the Triangle; presented a community partnership focused on high dosage tutoring. To view the presentation, use this link.

  • Superintendent Moore provided an overview of the topics covered in our Work Session: strategic plan work, summer learning plans, AIG Plan, and Comprehensive Plan for Equitable Discipline (CPED).

  • Dr. McMillen presented Board Policy 3410: Testing and Assessment Program as a revised policy for first reading. Revisions reflect updates made by the North Carolina School Boards Association. The Board approved the policy 9-0. Click here to read the revised policy.

  • Emily Mountford, Senior Director, Office of Professional Learning, presented Board Policy 3432: Professional Learning Communities as a new policy for first reading. This will be a WCPSS-specific policy, as there is no corresponding NC School Boards Association policy.  The Board approved the policy 8-1. Use this link to access the policy.

  • Russ Smith, Senior Director, Office of Security, presented revised Board Policy 4342: Student Searches for first reading.  Revisions reflect updates made by staff. The Board approved the policy 9-0. Click here to review the revised policy.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . April 30, 2021

On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning.
