Monday was Memorial Day. It was a beautiful day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Country. On Wednesday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting.

This week as a Board, we had one meeting: Policy Committee.

At the Tuesday, May 31st Policy Committee Meeting:

  • Dr. McMillen, Assistant Superintendent, Data, Research, and Accountability; presented a revised Board Policy 3410: Testing and Assessment Program. The revisions reflect updates made by the North Carolina School Boards Association. There were adjustments suggested by the Board. This revised policy will be presented for first reading at the June 7th Board Meeting. To review the revised policy, click here.

  • Emily Mountford, Senior Director, Office of Professional Learning; presented a new Board policy.  Policy 3432: Professional Learning Communities will be a WCPSS-specific policy as there is no corresponding NC School Boards Association policy. To access her presentation, use this link. Click here to view the new policy. There were several revisions supported by the Board. This new policy will be presented for first reading at the June 7th Board Meeting.

  • Russ Smith, Senior Director, Office of Security; presented a revised Board Policy 4342: Student Searches. Revisions reflect updates made by staff focused on breathalyzers. There were some suggestions made by the Board that will be incorporated into this draft. Additionally, staff will work on a R & P for this policy. If the R&P is too short, then staff will look at adding the information in the policy. This will be presented for first reading at the June 7th Board Meeting. Use this link to access the revised policy.

  • Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, presented a revised Board Policy 7503: Teleworking.  The revisions reflect updates made by WCPSS staff.  I voiced my support for these revisions as it will allow WCPSS to be more competitive, provide flexibility for staff, and offer hybrid and fully remote positions. To view the revised policy, click here. This policy will be presented for first reading at the June 7th Board Meeting.
