 On Wednesday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting.

This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Student Achievement Committee and Policy Committee.

At the Monday, June 27th Student Achievement Committee:

  • Jill McKenna, Assistant Superintendent, Special Education Services; Steph Watson, Senior Director, District Management Group; and Joe Costello, Senior Associate, District Management Group; provided a high-level overview of the findings of their review of the Wake County Public School System special education systems and programming.   • Eric Fitts, Senior Director, Middle School Programs; Dr. Paeplow, Sr. Director for Program Accountability, Data, Research and Accountability; Dr. McMillen, Assistant Superintendent, Data, Research and Accountability; and Tina Zarzecki, Principal, Carroll Middle School; shared findings and recommendations about the implementation of competency-based grading within a WCPSS middle school during the 2018-19, 2019-2020, and 2020-21 school years. Staff was recommending expanding this program. However, multiple Board members (including myself) raised concerns about the program, data presented, and missing information. At the Tuesday, June 28th Policy Committee:
  • Dr. Gardner, Chief of Staff; and Dr. Crain, Director, Strategy and Policy; presented a revised Board Policy 2121: Board Member Conflict of Interest. Revisions reflect updates made by the North Carolina School Boards Association. Use this link to access the revised policy. There were some adjustments suggested by the Board. This revised policy will be presented for first reading at a future Board Meeting.

  • Susan Pulliam, Senior Director, Student Assignment; presented Board Policy 4100: Admission to the Wake County Public School System as a revised policy. The revisions reflect updates made by the North Carolina School Boards Association and district staff. Click here to view the revised policy. Some additional revisions were recommended by the Board. This policy will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading.

  • Susan Pulliam presented a revised Board Policy 4150: School Assignment and Transfers. Revisions reflect updates made by staff. Due to an error, the revised policy is not currently loaded into Simbli, The Board did suggest some adjustments. This revised policy will be presented for first reading at a future Board Meeting.

  • Paula De Lucca, Senior Director, Child Nutrition Services; presented Board Policy 6220: Operation of School Nutrition Services as a revised policy. Revisions reflect updates made by the North Carolina School Boards Association.  Use this link to access the revised policy. This policy will be presented at a future Board Meeting for first reading.

  • Mark Winters, Finance Officer; presented a revised Board Policy 8305: Federal Grant Administration. The revisions reflect updates made by the North Carolina School Boards Association. This week as a Board, we had three meetings on Tuesday, April 20th: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, April 20th Finance Committee: David Neter, Chief Operating Officer; and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented the budget questions submitted by Board Members and provided answers. On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . This week as a Board, we had no meetings.  Next week as a Board, we have the following meetings (Please remember these meetings will be streamed live on the  WCPSS YouTube Channel .): Tuesday, January 4th at 4:00 pm- Work Session. The items on the agenda are review of the WCPSS Board legislative priorities and the District 4 Board seat vacancy. Use this link to view the agenda. April 30, 2021

On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning. The energy, focus, and enthusiasm of each school staff member spoke vol
