On Sunday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, August 2nd Finance Committee Meeting:

  • David Neter, Chief Business Officer, provided recommendations to reconcile the Board's proposed 2022-23 budget to final County appropriation and State budget-including compensation recommendations. Staff will request Board approval at the August 16th Board Meeting. Staff compensation would be adjusted (if approved on August 16th) in time for the September payroll-including retro pay to July 1st. To view the presentation, click here.

At the Tuesday, August 2nd Work Session:
  • Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, provided an overview of the updated health guidance. Click here to view the presentation.

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics; and Lauren Acome, Director, Online Learning; provided an update regarding HB 103 and SB 671 with a focus on the potential parameters the district may consider in the use of up to 5 emergency remote learning days (or 30 hours) during the 2022-23 school year. Staff mentioned the days would be asynchronous meaning no live instruction. I expressed my concern about the use of remote learning days. Use this link to view the presentation.

At the Tuesday, August 2nd Board Meeting:
  • Superintendent Moore provided an overview of topics covered in our Finance Committee Meeting and Work Session: recommendations to reconcile the Board's proposed budget to County appropriation and State budget, compensation recommendations, updated health guidance, and the use of remote learning days.

  • The Board approved the following policies on second reading 9-0: Board Policy 2121: Board Member Conflict of Interest, Board Policy 4100: Admission to the Wake County Public School System, Board Policy 6220: Operation of School Nutrition Services, Board Policy 8305: Federal Grant Administration, and Board Policy 4150: School Assignment and Transfers.

  • Glenn Carrozza – Assistant Superintendent, School Choice, Planning and Assignment; presented proposed changes to the 2022-23 instructional calendars for Board approval. The changes closed schools on Election Day. All calendars were presented except year-round calendars. The Board approved the calendars 9-0. To view the updated calendars use the following links: Modified, Traditional, Wake Leadership Academies, KHS, NWCCA, VMCCA, WECHS, and WECIBT; and Wake STEM. There was a presentation regarding options for year-round calendars. The Board will vote on the year-round calendars at the August 16th Board Meeting.

  • The Board reviewed and determined the eligibility for membership in BACs for the 2022-23 school year in light of the April 5, 2022 redistricting of the Board election districts. The Board approved (9-0) option 1: Implement new election districts at the start of the 2022-23 school year. Council members must meet eligibility criteria for the new district at the start of the school year (reside in or have a child attending school in the new district). This option does not require a waiver of Board policy.  As noted above, Section C. 6. of Board policy 2231 states: “within a reasonable length of time following the Oath of Office for newly appointed or elected Board members or after redistricting, Board members will have responsibility for reviewing Council membership and reinstating individual membership, subject to the approval of the Board of Education.”

On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning. The energy, focus, and enthusiasm of each school staff member spoke vol
