September 2, 2022

On Sunday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting. On Monday, I visited Green Hope High School for the Senior Parade and to welcome students as they arrived for their first day of school. On Thursday, I visited Carpenter Elementary School and attended Apex High School football game. 

This week as a Board, we had one meeting: Policy Committee.

At the Tuesday, August 30th Policy Committee Meeting:

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics; and Lauren Acome, Director, K-12 Online Learning; presented revised Board Policy 3102: Online Instruction. There were additional changes supported by the Board and the R & P will have more parameters about the use of remote learning days. This revised policy will be presented for first reading at a future Board Meeting. Click here to view the revised policy presented.

  • Drew Cook and Lauren Acome presented revised Board Policy 3300: School Calendar and Time for Learning. There were additional changes supported by the Board. This revised policy will be presented for first reading at a future Board Meeting. Use this link to access the revised policy presented.

  • Mark Winters, Finance Officer; Debra Wallace, Senior Director, Purchasing; and Pam Gales, Senior Administrator, Equity Affairs; presented new Board Policy 6402: Participation by Historically Underutilized Businesses. This policy was created by the NC School Boards Association as part of their Policies to Lead the Schools manual. This new policy will be presented for first reading at a future Board Meeting.   • Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources; and Kendra Hill, Senior Director, Employee Relations; presented new Board Policy 7720: Employee Political Activities. The policy was created by the NC School Boards Association as part of their Policies to Lead the Schools manual. It was determined that there was still work to be done on this policy, so it will return to a future Policy Committee Meeting for additional feedback.   • Dr. Chavis, Assistant Superintendent, Equity Affairs; presented new Board Policy 1150: Equity for information and discussion. This is the third time the same version of the policy has been presented to the Board since I joined in December 2020. I requested community input and that staff take feedback received to adjust the policy so that the next time it is presented, there will be revisions noted. It was determined that additional work is to be done and that the policy will return to the Board for more feedback and action. Click here to view the presentation. Use this link to view the policy.

  • Tuesday, September 6th 3:30 pm- Work Session. Items on the agenda are School Mental Health Improvement Plan and discussion of a possible ombudsman position. Click here to view the agenda.

  • Tuesday, September 6th at 5:30 pm- Board Meeting*. Some of the items on the agenda are fund appropriation request-Wake Together, HELPS Education Fund, Bus Driver sign on bonus, fund balance appropriation for school staff support, and more. Use this link to access the agenda.

November 5, 2021

On Wednesday, I visited Salem Elementary and provided assistance during carpool at dismissal. On Thursday, I attended the Wake County State of the County Address. You can watch the recording of the State of the County at  this link . This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, November 2nd Work Session: Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, shared the history and status of the School Mental Health Improvement Plan. Paul Koh and Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, provided an update on the voluntary COVID testing program and the federal mandates regarding staff testing and vaccination status. The Memorandum of Agreement with MAKO Medical will be presented for Board approval on November 16th. This is my final blog as the D9 Representative of the Wake County Board of Education. I want to thank all the students, families, school staff, and community members that have taken the time to email, speak with me over the phone, attend a D9 Connection Meeting, attend a Board Advisory Council Meeting or attend any Board Meetings. I appreciate hearing directly from you and am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve District 9. While serving as the D9's representative, I have spend a significant amount of time attending events at our wonderful schools: beautification days, athletic signing events, band competitions and concerts, orchestra concerts, choral concerts, IMProv nights, fall performances, spring musicals, golf matches, wrestling matches, swim meets, track and field events, soccer games, football games, tennis matches, volleyball games, community nights, art galleries, classroom projects, dance performances, cheerleading competitions, parades, softball games, drama clu...
