September 23, 2022

On Sunday, I hosted a D9 Connection Meeting. On Thursday, I attended West Cary Middle School's football game. On Friday, I attended the Apex vs. Cary High School Football game.

This week as a Board, we had three meetings: Finance Committee, Work Session, and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, September 20th Finance Committee Meeting:

  • David Neter, Chief Business Officer; Mark Winters, Finance Officer; Dr. Muttillo, and Terri Kimzey, Senior Director, Budget; presented detailed information about Fiscal Accountability and Transparency. Use this link to review the presentation.

At the Tuesday, September 20th Work Session:
  • Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources; provided a staffing and recruitment update. Use this link to access the presentation.

  • Susan Pullium, Senior Director, Student Assignment; and Glenn Carrozza, Assistant Superintendent of School Choice, Planning and Assignment; presented Draft 1 of the 2023-24 Enrollment Plan. Click here to access Draft 1 and the proposed stability rules. Please note district staff is reviewing feedback and questions submitted via ThoughtExchange as they prepare FAQs and Draft 2. Use this link to leave your thoughts and questions. There will be four virtual information meetings: September 28th at 6 p.m.: Central area and Northern area proposed changes. Attend virtually. September 29th at 6 pm: Southeast Raleigh, Eastern and Northeastern areas proposed changes. Attend virtually. October 5th at 6 pm: Southeastern and Southern areas proposed changes. Attend virtually. October 6th at 6 pm:  Southwestern and Western areas proposed changes. Attend virtually.  Draft 2 will be presented to the Board and the public on October 18th. On November 10th, there will be a Public Hearing during a Special Called Board Meeting. Then on November 15th the Final Plan will be discussed during the Work Session, and the Board will vote on the final plan during the Board Meeting that evening.

At the Tuesday, September 20th Board Meeting:
  • Will Chavis, Assistant Superintendent for Equity Affairs; MariaRosa Rangel, Director of Family and Community Engagement, Office of Equity Affairs; and Mirtha Edwards, 2006 and 2016 Teacher of the Year; shared and highlighted some of the ongoing efforts to honor and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the Wake County Public School System.   • Superintendent Moore provided an overview of the topics from the Work Session and Finance Committee: Staffing Update, Draft 1 of the 2023-24 Enrollment Plan, and Fiscal Accountability and Transparency.

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics, presented revised Board Policy 3102: Online Instruction for first reading. Revisions reflect updates made by staff. The Board approved the first reading of this policy 9-0. Click here to access the revised policy.

  • Drew Cook presented revised Board Policy 3300: School Calendar and Time for Learning. The revisions were made by staff. The Board approved the first reading of this policy 9-0. Use this link to review the revised policy.

  • Mark Winters, Finance Officer, presented new Board Policy 6402: Participation by Historically Underutilized Businesses for first reading. This policy was created by the NC School Boards Association as part of their Policies to Lead the Schools Manual.  It is part of the Policy Migration Project. On Wednesday, I started my day at the Cary Chamber of Commerce's Eye Opener Breakfast with guest speaker Superintendent Catherine Truitt. On Wednesday, I visited Salem Elementary and provided assistance during carpool at dismissal. On Thursday, I attended the Wake County State of the County Address. You can watch the recording of the State of the County at  this link . This week as a Board, we had two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting. At the Tuesday, November 2nd Work Session: Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, shared the history and status of the School Mental Health Improvement Plan. Paul Koh and Dr. Muttillo, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, provided an update on the voluntary COVID testing program and the federal mandates regarding staff testing and vaccination status. The Memorandum of Agreement with MAKO Medical will be presented for Board approval on November 16th. This is my final blog as the D9 Representative of the Wake County Board of Education. I want to thank all the students, families, school staff, and community members that have taken the time to email, speak with me over the phone, attend a D9 Connection Meeting, attend a Board Advisory Council Meeting or attend any Board Meetings. I appreciate hearing directly from you and am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve District 9. While serving as the D9's representative, I have spend a significant amount of time attending events at our wonderful schools: beautification days, athletic signing events, band competitions and concerts, orchestra concerts, choral concerts, IMProv nights, fall performances, spring musicals, golf matches, wrestling matches, swim meets, track and field events, soccer games, football games, tennis matches, volleyball games, community nights, art galleries, classroom projects, dance performances, cheerleading competitions, parades, softball games, drama clu...
