On Wednesday, I attended Cary High School's spectacular performance of Clue! Outstanding job cast, crew, and Director-Mrs. McCormick.  On Thursday, I attended Green Hope's Homecoming Football Game.

This week as a Board we had three meetings: Student Achievement Committee, Safety and Security Committee, and Policy Committee.

At the Monday, September 26th Student Achievement Committee Meeting:

  • Dr. Edward McFarland, Chief Academic Advancement Officer; presented an overview of bell schedule planning, shared different options for moving high schools to a later start time, and provided the process and next steps for gathering input and feedback from stakeholders about the 2024-2025 bell schedule. Use this link to view the presentation.

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics; Christina Zukowski, Director, K-12 Mathematics; John Pritchett, High School Teacher, Athens Drive High School; and Emily Hooks, 8th Grade Math Teacher, West Cary Middle School; provided an update on Mathematics instruction in WCPSS, an overview of math resources and instructional supports provided to schools during the pandemic, and current plans for mathematics instruction. Click here to access the presentation. There will be additional presentations about Mathematics in the near future. To provide some background, I have been asking for information to be released sooner. However, district staff have not moved up any dates. For example, initially the Board was informed that the anticipated date for the OpenUp Math Curriculum Adoption Evaluation Project Report to be shared with the Board was March 2022. I have followed up multiple times with district staff about an updated date for that information to be shared with the Board. Currently, district staff plan to present that report to the Board in November.

At the Tuesday, September 27th Policy Committee Meeting:
  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent, Academics; presented revised Board Policy 3102 R&P: Online Instruction is presented as a revised RP. The revisions reflect updates made by staff and add parameters around the use of remote learning days. It will replace current policy 3102 R&P: Online Instruction. Use this link to view the R&P. District staff determines R&P.

  • Drew Cook presented revised Board Policy 3420: Student Promotion and Accountability. Click here to access the revised policy. It will be presented to the Board for first reading at a future Board Meeting.

  • Drew Cook presented Board Policy 3420 R&P: Student Promotion and Accountability. Use this link to view the revised R&P.

  • The Board decided to wait to move forward with the discussion of the new Board Policy 7720: Employee Political Activities. Since we are in the middle of a campaign period and there are already policies in place that address political activities of employees, we determined it would be better timing to wait until the current campaign period is over to discuss this new policy.

I have received a number of questions related to the proposed Stability Rules and Stability Transfer Process that are part of the proposed 2023-24 Student Enrollment Plan. District staff has provided the following additional information regarding the Stability Transfer process: Staff will be contacting families eligible for a Stability Transfer to provide them with the technology to submit their request.  All requests submitted during this period will be guaranteed for eligible students. This will include siblings rising into K, 6th or 9th as well. Please note the main form of contact will be through school messenger (email, phone and/or text-depending on the options families are signed up for.). Then Student Assignment staff will review these requests, crosscheck their information to ensure they are eligible based on the approved Enrollment Plan, and assign the student(s) back to their current school.  District bus transportation will not be provided to any student(s) assigned back to their current school.

If you have any questions or comments, please email me at kcarter3@wcpss.net.
