September 9, 2022

On Thursday, I visited Laurel Park Elementary School. Later that evening, I attended the Apex vs Green Hope Soccer Game. On Saturday, I plan to attend the four Bands of Cary performance at Green Level High School. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

This week as a Board, we have two meetings: Work Session and Board Meeting.

At the Tuesday, September 6th Work Session:

  • Paul Koh, Assistant Superintendent, Student Support Services; Kendra Hill, Senior Director, Human Resources; Cam Lopes, Director, Special Education Services; Mark Cowell, Senior Administrator, Crisis Prevention & Intervention; and Rae Marsh, Coordinator, School-based Mental Health Program; presented an update on the WCPSS School Mental Health Improvement Plan.   • Superintendent Moore led a Board discussion about the possibility of an ombuds position. Positive feedback was given about moving forward with this position.

At the Tuesday, September 6th Board Meeting:
  • Superintendent Moore provided an overview of the topics from the Work Session: WCPSS School Mental Health Improvement Plan and a possible ombuds position.

  • Drew Cook, Assistant Superintendent for Academics, requested a fund balance appropriation for the HELPS Education contract and funds to support the district implementation of the Wake Together partnership. The Board approved the request 8-0.

  • Drew Cook presented two contracts for Board approval. The contracts will provide HELPS small group professional learning, materials, and coaching support for Title I staff in Wake County Public Schools. Additionally, HELPS one-on-one professional learning will be provided to volunteers along with materials and coaching support to ensure that tutors are effectively trained when supporting students in the classroom. This professional learning, materials, and coaching support will be implemented in the 2022-2023 school year. The Board approved the contracts 8-0. Click here to view one contract.   • Mark Strickland, Chief Facilities and Operations Officer, requested Board's approval to continue to offer a $1,200 sign-on bonus to new bus drivers for the FY 2022-2023 and in subsequent years, aided to help attract applicants to fill vacant bus driver positions.  The bonus would be payable in two parts-$400 after the first three months of employment and $800 after 12 months of employment. The Board approved this request 8-0. 

  • David Neter, Chief Business Officer, requested Board's approval for a one-time fund balance appropriation of $6 million for 1,000 months of employment for school staffing support. These months of employment will provide targeted resources for: Pay for Planning to provide classroom coverage for teacher vacancies or absences of more than 10 days; Maintain class size, small school allotments, track issues; and Day 20 school allotment reconciliation. The Board approved the request 8-0.

On Wednesday, I watched the media briefing with Dr. Benjamin, ABC Science Collaborative, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Benjamin presented information about the Test-to-Stay Program, initial analysis, and recommendations. To view the briefing, use this link . April 30, 2021

On Wednesday morning, I attended the student-led Tobacco-Free Community Forum. The students did a great job with presentations, voicing their concerns, and advocating. To view information about the event, click  here . Later on Wednesday, I attended two additional events: the East Cary Middle School Student Showcase and a press conference. From World Languages to Art to Culinary Club, the Student Showcase was fabulous! It was nice to see the creative student assignments and activities. The joint press conference with the County Commissioners was to announce a new initiative- ThreeSchool. Please note, the details shared during the press conference were the first details to be shared with the majority of the Board. This link provides information about ThreeSchool. On Thursday, I visited Northwoods Elementary and Kingswood Elementary. Seeing the students engaged, playing, and learning made for an outstanding morning. The energy, focus, and enthusiasm of each school staff member spoke vol
